12 DAY CAPE YORK CAMPING SAFARI (Drive/Sea)

Travel the tracks from Cairns to Cape York via 4wd and you will experience a world you never knew existed. Become educated in "The Cape" by your guide, eat delicious "Camp Oven" food and make new friends en route to "The Tip" of Australia. Then sit back on the M.V. Trinity Bay Cargo Boat for a relaxing cruise back to Cairns from Cape York.

DAY 1 CAIRNS - COOKTOWN (L)


After an early morning pick up at your Cairns accommodation or Caravan Park, we travel the scenic coastline past Port Douglas and Mossman to reach the Daintree - Cape Tribulation National Park area. If weather permits we tackle the steep "Bloomfield Track" and cross the Bloomfield River then into the dense mountainous rainforests of North Queensland. A short visit to the historic Lions Den Pub, then a pause at Black Mountain before arriving in historic Cooktown. We visit Grassy Hill and visit some of the town's other landmarks in the afternoon.

 

DAY 2 COOKTOWN - LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK (BLD)


Today we travel west via Battlecamp Road through escarpment country noted for gold rush pioneering hardships entwined with tales of infamy. We stop at Old Laura Homestead for a cool drink before continuing on our way through Lakefield National Park with its prolific wildlife including Ibis, Bustards, Jabirus, Brolgas, Pigs and Crocodiles. This evening we camp in the National Park.

 

DAY 3 LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK - OLD MUSGRAVE TELEGRAPH STATION (BLD)


Leave the wonders of Lakefield behind passing the parks plentiful billabongs, waterhole's and creeks as you travel to Musgrave Station take the time out to look at the stations collection of old photos of the area. Tonight we camp at Old Musgrave Telegraph Station.

 

DAY 4 OLD MUSGRAVE TELEGRAPH STATION - WEIPA (BLD)


Travel through the remote township of Coen and cross Archer River on your way the Gulf town of Weipa. Camping over night at Weipa.

 

DAY 5 WEIPA - BRAMWELL CATTLE STATION (BLD)


Join an optional tour of the Bauxite mine and town (own expense) or relax around camp before heading for Australia's Northern most cattle station, Bramwell Cattle Station and our camp for the night.

 

DAY 6 BRAMWELL STATION - TWIN FALLS (BLD)


Four wheel drive begins in earnest as we cross creeks, washouts and ditches. We travel through spectacular Heathlands Reserve with its low scrub country and monster termite mounds to arrive at Twin Falls, the absolute jewel in our Cape York crown. Here we explore, swim, relax and enjoy the exquisitely beautiful series of waterfalls on the Elliot river including Twin Falls and Indian Head Falls.

 

DAY 7 TWIN FALLS - LOYALTY BEACH (BLD)


Today we traverse more rough roads and tracks, cross the Jardine River by old world cable ferry then travel on through the township of Bamaga to our picturesque base camp overlooking Torres Strait at Loyalty Beach camp grounds.

 

DAY 8 THURSDAY ISLAND OPTIONS (BLD)


There is an option today of a day tour to Thursday Island and also Horn Island (both own expense) by inter island fast ferry or alternatively, just relax on the beach near base camp.

DAY 9 CAPE YORK (BLD)


After a short sleep in, we drive to the top of Australia and enjoy the walk out to the very end of the peninsula. After celebrations and photographs we meander through other historical areas before returning to our camp overlooking the Torres Strait at Loyalty Beach.

 

DAY 10, 11 and 12 CARGO BOAT to CAIRNS (BLD)


This morning it is "all aboard" the working coastal freighter M.V. Trinity Bay as it loads its cargo from the wharf at Seisia located on the mainland of Australia's North. Watch the final loading of vehicles and returning containers bound for Cairns. Relax and enjoy the voyage as the ship cruises away from Seisia Jetty and heads south through the tropical waters of the coast. On arrival at Trinity Wharf (anytime between 9.00am and 5.00pm depending on cargo logistics) your tour concludes with a drop off at your Cairns accommodation.
